Rich with history, Playa Vista was once the home of the Tongva Native Americans. Aviator, film producer, and philanthropist Howard Hughes purchased the site back in the 1940s and constructed an aircraft factory where he built the Spruce Goose. Playa Vista is currently a vibrant new community on the Los Angeles Westside. There has not been a master-planned community of this magnitude on the Westside in over 50-years.
The first phase of Playa Vista was established in 2001 as a mix affordable and luxury residential housing, office, and commercial space. Retail and vast open spaces with numerous recreational amenities are set to the restored Ballona Wetlands and wildlife preserve. The community has a Fire Department, Public Library, proposed K-8 operated by the City of Los Angeles.
The community was selected by President Bill Clinton in a National Pilot Project called PATH (Partnership for Advanced Technology in Housing). Thus, Playa Vista has been billed as one of the most technologically advanced communities ever planned with fully connected telecommunications and broadband capabilities. In addition, the construction has been a model for green development using energy saving systems, non-toxic and recycled materials, product selections and design techniques that promote conservation minimizing the impacts of development on the environment. As a testament, Playa Vista uses 100% recycled water to service their landscaping.
Playa Vista's engineers, builders and consultants have been applauded by the City of Los Angeles as one of the most elaborate project the city has required.
